An output device that displays information in text or graphic form is called a computer monitor. A visual display, some circuitry, a casing, and a power source usually make up a monitor.
What is Monitor?
A monitor commonly referred to as a video display terminal (VDT) or a video display unit, is an electronic output device (VDU). A computer’s video card is used to display images, text, video, and graphical data produced by a connected computer. Although it almost looks like a TV, it has a far greater resolution. On March 1st, 1973, the Xerox Alto computer system debuted with the first computer monitor.
Older monitors occupied more desk space as they were heavier and larger in size due to the use of fluorescent screens and cathode ray tubes (CRTs). All modern monitors are built with flat-panel display technology and often have LED backlighting. Compared to earlier CRT screens, these contemporary monitors are smaller and take up less desk space.

History of Monitor
- The Uniscope 300 device had a built-in CRT display in 1964 but was not a true computer monitor.
Touch screen technology was introduced in 1965 by A. Made by Johnson.
- The first computer display was a feature of the Xerox Alto computer, released on March 1, 1973. This monitor used CRT technology and had a monochrome display.
- The first resistive touch screen display was created by George Samuel Hurst in 1975, although it was already in use before 1982.
- The Apple I and Sol-20 computer systems were unveiled in 1976. A built-in video connector on these computers made it possible to play a video screen on a computer monitor.
